Skin Conditions

Calluses and Corns

Corns and calluses look like thick, tough layers of skin. Corns are usually found on or between the toes. Calluses are found on the soles of the feet. This thickening is a protective response of the skin to repeated friction or pressure, particularly where skin rubs against bony areas of the foot.

The primary cause of corns and calluses is poorly fitting footwear, especially in older individuals. Additional contributing factors include weight gain, abnormal walking patterns, and changes in foot shape such as bunions or hammer toes. Your pharmacist can recommend strategies and products to help!

Plantar Warts

Warts on the soles of the feet are called plantar warts. They can appear as pink, skin-coloured, or gray-brown skin growths and are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Plantar warts can occur at any age and are spread through direct contact with another wart or contaminated surface. This most commonly occurs when barefoot at swimming pools, communal showers, or locker rooms.

Warts are generally harmless and will often clear on their own after an extended period of time, but can cause discomfort or be cosmetically bothersome. Contact your pharmacist to see if you can benefit from treatment!

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection that causes a rash on the feet. Symptoms of the rash include itching, burning, and stinging between the toes or on the soles of the feet. The affected skin may also be red, dry, scaly, and may develop blisters or cracks. Your pharmacist may be able to provide medications to relieve the symptoms.

Insect Bites and Hives

Hives are raised patches of skin that are very itchy. They are the result of an allergic reaction to insect bites or other things you may be allergic to.

Disclaimer: Sometimes hives occur as part of a more serious allergic reaction. Go to emergency if you are experiencing any symptoms of a serious reaction such as:
• Difficulty breathing or wheezing
• Swelling of face, mouth or throat
• Feeling dizzy or lightheaded, or fainting
• Skin that is cool, moist, and unusually pale

Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Signs of acne include the presence of pimples such as blackheads, whiteheads, small or large red bumps, and cysts. Acne can be mild, moderate, or severe, and may cause scarring. Your pharmacist may be able to provide topical medication to treat your acne or assess if a referral to a physician may be necessary.

Ringworm

Ringworm, also known as tinea corporis, is a common skin infection caused by a fungus or yeast. It presents as a circular or ring-shaped rash on the skin that is red, itchy, and scaly. The rash may have raised borders and a pale or pink center. Ringworm can occur on any part of the body. Over time, the rash may spread from one part of the body to other parts. Your pharmacist may be able to prescribe topical medications to eliminate the fungus and alleviate symptoms.

Diaper Rash

Diaper rash is a common occurrence in babies and children who wear diapers. It occurs when the skin in the diaper area is irritated because of long exposure to moisture, friction, and contact with urine and feces. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, or scaling in the diaper area. Your pharmacist may be able to prescribe topical drugs to reduce these symptoms.

If the rash appears outside of the normal areas covered by the diaper, or if there is a fever or blisters that are bleeding or filled with pus, please see your doctor.

Tick Bite – Lyme Disease Prevention

Lyme disease is an infection that can be spread by ticks to humans. Only ticks that are infected with this bacteria can spread the infection. Black legged ticks are the types of ticks that can carry the bacteria, but not every black legged tick will be infected. In order for an infected tick to pass on the infection to humans, the tick needs to have bitten the person.

Lyme disease starts as a rash that often, although not always, looks like a bull’s eye or ring pattern. If left untreated, it can cause other serious symptoms such as fever, feeling weak, body aches, or nerve pain. If you were bitten by a tick within the last 72 hours and are not displaying serious symptoms, your pharmacist may be able to prescribe an antibiotic to help prevent Lyme disease from occuring.

Shingles Treatment

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person has had chickenpox, the virus remains inactive and can reactivate years later as shingles. Shingles appears as a painful rash consisting of fluid-filled blisters that develops on one side of the face or body. A few days before the rash appears, people often have pain, itching, or tingling in the area where the rash will develop. Your pharmacist may be able to provide antiviral drugs to treat shingles and shorten the length and severity of the illness.

Skin Irritations (Dermatitis)

Dermatitis is a general term for inflammation of the skin. It can be caused by a number of different factors, including allergic reactions, irritants, and other skin conditions. Dermatitis can cause dry, red and itchy skin. Other symptoms of dermatitis include flaking or peeling skin and cracking or scaling skin.

Disclaimer: Sometimes hives occur as part of a more serious allergic reaction. Go to emergency if you are experiencing any symptoms of a serious reaction such as:
• Difficulty breathing or wheezing
• Swelling of face, mouth or throat
• Feeling dizzy or lightheaded, or fainting
• Skin that is cool, moist, and unusually pale

Skin Infections (Impetigo)

Impetigo is a contagious skin infection that can happen if bacteria gets into cuts, scrapes, or other small openings in the skin. It is more common in younger children but can also happen in older children and adults. Impetigo causes red bumps that will turn into blisters filled with fluid. The fluid will eventually leak out and form a scab or crust that is yellow, gold (honeycomb coloured) or brown in colour.

Jock Itch

Jock itch is a common fungal infection that affects the skin of the groin, inner thighs, and buttocks. The symptoms of jock itch include a red, itchy, ring-shaped rash in the groin area, which may spread to the inner thighs and buttocks. Jock itch can also cause a burning sensation, and in some cases, blistering or peeling skin. Your pharmacist may be able to prescribe antifungal medication, such as creams or sprays to help reduce your symptoms.
