What
is compounding?
Simply put, it is when a pharmacist creates one-of-a-kind medications
based on the unique needs of a patient as ordered by a physician.
The pharmacist may take an existing medication and compound it into
a form more easily taken by the patient. Examples of compounding
medication needs could include
1) a child who needs a liquidized version of a medicine in order
to more easily take it, or a medicine whose taste has been changed
to make it more palatable for a child to take.
2) An arthritis medicine that may cause stomach ulcers when taken
orally can be compounded into a gel that can be applied topically
to the skin, treating only the area of application.
3) For patients who have lost the ability to swallow, compounding
can convert a drug into a gel form that can also be applied topically,
thus avoiding the need to administer the drug by injection or suppository.
Although
there are many medications available from manufacturers, sometimes
they are in a form or strength that is not quite right for you.
Through specialized training we can create a product as individual
as you are. Working with your doctor, we can produce a topical cream,
capsule, troche, suspension or suppository to meet your personalized
needs. We are also capable of taking a available liquid medication
and changing the flavour to better suit your taste buds.
Mixing Vs. Compounding:
The vast majority pharmacists are able to mix certain medicines.
Mixing, in pharmacy, consists of taking two or more commercially
available products and combining them into a suitable form for a
patient or use in a medical procedure. We have certified pharmacists
and technicians who have attended a specialized training seminar
in Houston, Texas or London, Ontario.
With the support of both the Professional Compounding Centers of
America (PCCA) and FlavoRx, we are able to produce a final product
using raw ingredients.
The difference is more like baking a cake from scratch or from a
mix! From scratch, we can control the ingredients being used and
make sure that each is compatible with you. The bottom line is we
can offer more variety and we have specialized equipment to individualize
your medicines.

Compounding
pharmacists feel that you should have some say about your prescriptions.
While drug companies produce products that most of society can use,
prescription compounding services, by a licensed professional, offer
patients alternatives by altering the dose or dosage form of a medication.
Compounding
is used for a variety of reasons. Compounding pharmacists have physicians
and patients contact them for a variety of reasons. Sometimes a
patient has an allergy to a color, preservative or filler, so your
pharmacist has to create an allergen-free form. Or they can convert
tablets to liquid when the pill is hard to swallow, even adding
flavoring to make it palatable.
Compounding
pharmacists see many cases of special needs for impotence and for
fertility. Veterinarians, too, often have special requirements that
your pharmacist can accommodate. We offer unique dosage forms and
flavours for your family pets. Ask us how we can help.
Compounding
services require prescriptions from a physician, which goes along
with the PCCA (Professional Compounding Centers of America) objective:
"One patient. One physician. One pharmacist. A triad relationship
that is truly fundamental to quality health care."
